No creo que sea una coincidencia…

El mes pasado, pasamos mucho tiempo celebrando y afirmando a diferentes miembros de la familia de nuestra iglesia. Tuvimos presentaciones de bebés, bautizos y una celebración del día del padre. A través de todo, el Señor realmente ha resaltado la importancia de ser una familia de afecto.
No creo que sea una coincidencia que a medida que crecemos en unidad, como familia de Dios, las cosas en nuestra nación parecen más tensas y fracturadas. En medio de nuestra crisis nacional, a veces se nos puede hacer fácil invalidar el dolor y la ira que vemos a nuestro alrededor. De otro modo, podríamos agregar nuestras propias opiniones apasionadas a las ondas de radio a través de las redes sociales o incluso en discusiones con amigos y familiares. Pero son estos momentos que me llevan a realmente buscar a Jesús. Me pregunto, ¿cómo se ve una comunidad marcada por la presencia de Jesús en medio de una nación dividida? ¿Cuál debe ser nuestra respuesta como pueblo de Dios?
Para obtener respuestas a estas preguntas, voy a Juan 17, donde Jesús oró no solo por sus discípulos en ese momento, sino también por ti y por mí, que vendríamos después de ellos. Él dijo:
“»No te pido solo por estos discípulos, sino también por todos los que creerán en mí por el mensaje de ellos. 21 Te pido que todos sean uno, así como tú y yo somos uno, es decir, como tú estás en mí, Padre, y yo estoy en ti. Y que ellos estén en nosotros, para que el mundo crea, que tú me enviaste.
22 »Les he dado la gloria que tú me diste, para que sean uno, como nosotros somos uno. 23 Yo estoy en ellos, y tú estás en mí. Que gocen de una unidad tan perfecta que el mundo sepa, que tú me enviaste y que los amas tanto como me amas a mí. 24 Padre, quiero que los que me diste estén conmigo donde yo estoy. Entonces podrán ver toda la gloria que me diste, porque me amaste aún antes de que comenzara el mundo.” Juan 17:20-24.
Aquí, Jesús no parece estar preocupado por defendernos del mundo, tampoco parece estar preocupado de que nos ganen con sus argumentos o publicaciones agresivas, sino que ora porque seamos uno como él y el Padre son uno. La señal para el mundo de que Jesús fue enviado por el Padre es la unidad de sus seguidores. Jesús describe esta unidad como tan perfecta que mostrará al mundo exactamente quién es Él y nos mostrará cuán profundamente somos amados por el Padre. Jesús está orando para que seamos un pueblo marcado por la unidad y el amor, y no puedo evitar preguntar, ¿es así como nos vemos ahora?
En medio de la presión política y la tensión general, creo que Jesús nos está invitando a regresar al lugar de Su presencia para que podamos permanecer en Él y Él pueda permanecer en nosotros. Nuestra prioridad sigue siendo amar a Dios y ser amados por Él.

Last month, we spent a lot of time celebrating and affirming different members of our church family. We had baby presentations, baptisms, and a Father’s Day celebration. Through it all, the Lord has really highlighted the importance of being a family of affection.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that as we grow in unity as the family of God, things in our nation seem all the more tense and fractured. As our nation is in turmoil, it would be easy to invalidate the hurt and anger we see around us. We could add our own passionate opinions to the airwaves via social media or even in arguments with friends and family members. But it’s moments like these that draw me to really seek Jesus. I wonder, what does a community marked by the presence of Jesus look like in the midst of a divided nation? What should our response be as the people of God?
For answers to these questions, I look to John 17, where Jesus prayed not only for his disciples in that moment, but for you and me who would come after them. He said:
“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. 21 I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. 23 I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me. 24 Father, I want these whom you have given me to be with me where I am. Then they can see all the glory you gave me because you loved me even before the world began! O righteous Father, the world doesn’t know you, but I do; and these disciples know you sent me. 26 I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them.” John 17:20-26.
Here, Jesus doesn’t seem concerned about the rest of the world. Nor does He seem worried that they would win us over with their arguments or aggressive social media posts, but instead, what He prays for is that we would be one as he and the Father are one. The mark for the world that Jesus was sent by the Father is the unity of Jesus’ followers. Jesus describes this unity as so perfect that it will show the world exactly who He is and it will show us how deeply we are loved by the Father. Jesus is praying that we would be a people marked by unity and love, and I can’t help but ask, is that what we look like right now?
In the midst of political pressure and general tension, I believe Jesus is inviting us back to the place of His presence so we can remain in Him, and He can remain in us. Our priority remains to love God and be loved by Him.
